My First Year Doing NaNoWriMo + Introduction of the Story!

Happy Halloween! Tomorrow, it’ll be November. Which means NaNoWriMo begins; my first year making an attempt at it. Feel free to add me on NaNoWriMo if you’re also participating!

The story will be called Across the Land. Set in the world of Aeteal (I’m gonna say right now that name is a pun, and you can already figure out how so by the first sentence. You can get it, I believe in you) and stars Colos, an elf who lives in the small village of Slathorne, part of the country of Ultiria. Colos seeks adventure, and would love to go on one. The issue is that he was born with a defect that causes mana within him to build up in his mana network (think of it like a bloodstream of mana) and unable to release magic effectively. His brothers, Igna and Uya, do not have this issue and are able to successfully do what they want. The three were found as babies by their adopted mother, Verrona, in the forest after mysterious lights appeared before her. The green revealed Colos, the red revealed Igna, and the blue revealed Uya. Verrona raised the three like her own children and made sure to keep them safe, as the encounter in the forest was, without a doubt, incredibly mysterious.

Luckily for Colos, his family is kind; the entire village is kind to him. They attempt to help Colos solve these issues to the best of their ability. In Aeteal, you need to have a competent grasp of magic to safely travel the lands; a license is typically granted to allow one to officially take on quests. With his weakened wind magic, Colos—at best—can maybe move a glass on the table closer to him or knock it over.

Everything changes one day. Igna and Uya visit home, returning from their classes at Five Elements Academy located in the capital of Ultiria, Nexen. Uya wishes to conduct an experiment in the old well of the town’s school using his water magic, and he needs Igna’s fire magic to assist. They have no issue inviting Colos to tag along, which he happily does. Wielding a mere Goat Steel Sword (forged from the metal horns goats continuously grow in Ultiria) he travels down below with his brothers. However, what the three discover will change everything; not only for them, but the entire world of Aeteal.

Aaaand that’s all I’ll say, for now. I’ll admit that, currently, 90% of this story is in my head, with nothing written aside from the notes. In order to complete this challenge, 50000 words are going to have to be written by the end of the month. Each day will need around 1500-2000 words if I want to keep on track. Since writing large amounts of words in a short time is my biggest issue in general, it’s going to be tough.

I’ll actually be streaming MORE on Twitch in order to help me take breaks/keep myself sane. Perhaps I may even do chill streams where I write (if that’s allowed, I’m not sure)? So be sure to follow me on there if you want. Aside from the potential writing, I play Wind Waker Randomizers, Fate/Grand Order, sometimes Pokemon, sometimes Minecraft, and other things.

This will act as a prologue to the overall series of Across the Land, which will continue either as a book series or a web novel; I have to see what would work the best, as I obviously still plan on continuing Phantonics. THAT, by the way, will have a very loose schedule this month. I may or may not post chapters at random times, so I apologize in advance for that.

Anyway, wish me luck with my first attempt at NaNoWriMo, and good luck to everyone else who is participating!

I Haven’t Made a Site Update in Quite Some Time, So Let’s Talk!

Hi everyone, long time no talk.

Over the past few weeks, my will to write has returned to me, and we are back in the game. I did start this newer version of the web novel back in January, so I’m certainly a lot further behind than I want to be. The delays in chapters are mainly contributed to mental health-related issues that have been amplified by everything happening this year. I can say they’re definitely still affecting me, but at least I’m making progress once more.

The chapters are being released weekly, with one new chapter for everyone. On Patreon, I now have it so we are two chapters ahead of everywhere else, which a new chapter posted there weekly as well. If you’re caught up with the story, and that interests you, then two bucks a month will grant you access. It is greatly appreciated if you do so, but as I’ve stressed in the past, simply reading the series is fantastic support on its own.

Don’t be shy about asking questions, by the way. If something in the story confuses the hell out of you, ask. I’ll answer as long as we don’t dive into spoiler territory. That is the thing though: there are loads of things that won’t make sense right away. Like what I’m doing with this new version involving Brandon *recent chapter spoilers* and his strange “alter ego” that has taken him over. It’s a new idea I have, yet it will all lead to the overall plot surrounding him that I’ve had all along. It will make sense in the long-run, just please be patient with it, just like you would with other points of the story.

I’ll admit it right now. One of my pet peeves is people who are not patient. In general, but also with writing. As this is a series that releases by the chapter, not everything is going to be covered right away. There’s a lot of content overall that needs to be covered, so it’ll take time. So, if you ask a question with the clear intent of “just tell us what the hell is happening” then it’ll probably be ignored. Genuine innocent curiosity, however, will loop back to what I discussed above: I’ll definitely answer you as long as we don’t get into spoiler territory.

I think I mentioned this on Royal Road, but this version of the web novel takes the comedy aspect of the series a lot more seriously. Comedy has been a thing with Phantonics since the beginning, so I figured that I would officially make it into a core part of what makes up the Phantonics universe. So, whacky antics will now be a more common part of the story. There are moments that will be quite stressful to read in the future, so a good balance of humor will be needed to help the reader not get too sad. Timing for this humor is something I’ve been working on; mainly involving Brandon. I hope to keep at it and make the “interlude” sections of the story in between arcs a lot more entertaining.

Speaking of, I’m not sure if I want to start doing interlude specific chapters. I’m still thinking about how I’d go about doing those. One thing I am heavily considering is beginning short stories of alternate “what-if” scenarios that could happen. I’d probably just call it “Phantonics Alternate” or something simple like that. Here, I’ll give away an idea for one: it would be called “Phantonics Alternate: Ash” and be a what-if scenario if Faith and Emma weren’t saved from the fire and they both died. It would be quite dark, so—naturally—it would be fun to write. Also, taking into consideration the humor thing, another side story thing I’d consider is one strictly for that kind of thing, that detaches itself quite far from the normal story. Maybe call it “Phantonics Fool” or something like that—idk I just pulled that title out of my ass. Right before this sentence that I’m writing right now, I took a small breather for a moment and noticed I had typed exactly 666 words, so that’s fun. Thought I’d mention it, just cause.

Side story-wise, Phantonics Sakura is still one that I will do whenever we reach 10 supporters on Patreon. Still only at one at the moment (shoutout to Novagirl93 for the support you’ve given so far) so, for those of you who do want to go that extra mile, that will be one of your (eventual) rewards. If you want to see Alexander Strauss in his own story (readers of the previous web novel will know him quite well—he’s a fan favorite from the few people I’ve talked to) then tell your friends! And for you lovely folks that read the story normally, rest assured. It will be released to the public upon completion. I mention on Patreon that it will be released in chapters, much like the normal story, specifically on there. Random note: I’m pretty sure the side story for Faith will be called “Phantonics Flare” and I have a good idea as to where I want to place it in the timeline. It’s… quite far off, however. We’ll deal with that once we get to that point. Random note 2: Alexander’s side story is called “Phantonics Sakura” due to his Psycho Matter matching the color of cherry blossoms—I know, creative. It has nothing to do with that one person from that one series about ninjas.

I think I’m going to make chapters a bit longer again so that more content is released weekly. When this version started, I wanted chapters to be shorter so that people could sink into the story easier and not be as overwhelmed. It was also to help me keep up with a schedule, but we all know how that went. I’m going to keep it up as long as I can, and we can hopefully start to see some growth in the series as we get through this second half of the year (how is 2020 already halfway over wtf). The current Crimson Mine Arc should be done by the end of July and the arc after that will hopefully be done by the fall. That will get us through Book 1, perhaps around 2 years after I started the original web novel (October 27, 2018 will always be considered Phantonics’ birthday, btw). I’m doing a really rough estimate here (especially considering how I am) and I’m guessing Book 2 will go into 2021. If I do well enough, maybe we can reach the territory of new new content like… a year or so from now? It’s kind of rough to type that out, but who knows? I could pull off something crazy and write much more before then. It all depends.

I should clarify, as I said before, there’s plenty of new content before we reach that point. The Crimson Mine Arc currently in progress is completely new, surrounding that two chapter fight with Derek in the previous version. It’s much more expanded than before, taking place in an entirely different setting. Fun fact: this mine was actually something from the original Phantonics that I wrote a decade ago. It’s kind of nice to go back to it when I’m actually somewhat competent with writing (somewhat). The following arc will have extra content expanding on that fight with Carl in the woods. Book 2’s first arc will be roughly the same (done better, though—I honestly did not care too much for how I wrote that), then there will be another completely new arc, followed by the arc the last version left off on. That one will be similar, with some differences with how some of the fights play out. Once we get past the point of the Chris fight and the situation that was going on with Emma, we’ll be in new territory. I’ve mentioned this before, but I, unfortunately, did pull the plug right before the super crazy stuff went down. It motivates me to get back to that point, but I know I have to take it slow. Or, just be careful with my writing. If I want to go off with writing, I certainly can if I’m in the right mindset. This simple update, for example, is WAY longer than I thought it would be. It’s a lot of rambling, but I’ve felt like I’ve covered some good points. Not only for you guys to read, but for me to think about.

Anyway, I think I’ll end it here, on that note. If you actually read through this entire thing, bless your soul. This update alone is about an average length of a chapter, and it took me about an hour to write (that does count the small breaks though). So, can I keep this up and work on an actual chapter right now? Or will I go to bed? Both sound tempting. We shall see.

Thank you,

-Kyle

Important Announcement on the Future of Phantonics. Good Things Are Coming!

I’ve made a big decision today, after hours of brainstorming all sorts of things. First, let me just say this: thank you. Thank you for reading Phantonics up to this point. It was my first web novel, and I learned so much from the experience. Now, by reading these words, you’re assuming the web novel is over?

Yes and no.

This version of the story is coming to an end. I’ve struggled for a while now to keep certain plot points rolling, but it’s just turned into a hot mess. From this moment, all the chapters will be removed from Royal Road, and they will be archived on the main site for you to read at any time here. You’re probably asking: “Kyle, why delete it all off of Royal Road. You had, like, 16000 views?” This is true—I’m very proud of the success the series has brought so far. But having views isn’t important to me. What’s important to me is a thrilling story that people can genuinely enjoy.

…You’re saying that doesn’t answer the question, as that still isn’t really a reason to just up and remove the chapters on Royal Road? Right—the real reason:

The web novel is not over. It’s just starting over. That’s right, starting (hopefully) tomorrow, I will begin posting chapters of the newer version of the story! Chapters, at the start at least, will be shorter and much easier for me to manage. I’ll set a firm schedule once I get a feel for how much I can write.

I learned so much about the story with the previous version; I now know of loads of things that work and don’t work. This new version off the bat will take a much better direction in that regard. Also, I’ve finally pieced together many of the events that take place prior to the start of the story—ones that will tie the story even more firmly together. I have a really good feeling about this version, and I can’t wait to start sharing it with you all.

I’ve also stated somewhat recently that I’ve begun development on the books for the series? Yeah, this will be the version I plan on turning into books, actually. We’ll get to that point once we reach it. Oh, while we’re on the subject, this version of the story will be labeled as books rather than volumes. The first book is going to be called Serenity, and the first chapter will be labeled “Book 1 (Serenity): Chapter 1,” and so on. The 1.1 kind of style confused a lot of people, and even though I’m aware lots of web novels label chapters in that manner, I’ll just keep it simple.

I know I come up with lots of decisions on the fly, which is one reason why the title of the site now says, “A Creative, Chaotic Soul.” Thank you for sticking with me while I try to work these things out. I’m hoping you continue to read Phantonics, and share your experience, questions, and concerns with me as we begin this “new” adventure.

…One last thing. This act of starting a “similar” story over again… It may be more related to Phantonics then you think it is…

Cheers!

Phantonics (Web Novel) Going on Hiatus

Hello everyone. It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update right here on the main site. I just wanted to make it official that Phantonics, for now, is going on hiatus.

Why? School, mainly. Classes are starting up for me, and I’d like to focus my time and effort into doing well enough in them. And I know I’ve been on and off about this for months, but… I’m not feeling too well with the web serial right now haha. I’ve thrown too many random ideas into the fray as I’ve written. It’s very fun for me to write like this… at first. But it gets to the point where I’m throwing myself into a corner.

On Twitter, I’ve said that I’ve begun working on the actual first novel of Phantonics that I want legitimately published. By “working on it” I’ve taken the time to establish how certain things will work out in my notes and such. I’m still actually on the actual first page when it comes to writing it. But, I want things to play out in a certain manner, and the web novel has definitely helped me shape the correct path I want this story to go. Characters, setting, world rules, and the major plot will remain the same, just some minor tweaks and additions to make the story flow better/help develop the story in various areas.

Will I want to continue the web novel? Who knows, I’ll say no and then the next day I’ll be writing it again. It’s all up in the air. However, I do like writing a web novel. I’m just not sure if Phantonics, a series that means so much to me, should be rushed with weekly releases. I have several other story ideas, and I plan on writing them at some point. Those may or may not become web novels themselves.

I’m still figuring out what to do with Patreon in the meantime. The support I have received so far has been very much appreciated, and I still want to give back, obviously. Sneak peeks of the book are for sure one thing I’ll do. I have to think of others. For general updates on how the book is going, I’ll post those on Twitter.

Hoping this semester will go well. In theory, I’ll have to go for one more semester after this one to get an associate’s degree, at last. That’s my main goal, yet I’ll see what the future holds for education beyond that point. College over the years has not flowed well with me at all, so that’s another definite reason as to why I want to buckle down and focus.

Thank you for all of the support for Phantonics so far and for me in general!

New Name for the Site! + Update

Welcome to kyologist.com! Once phantonics.com, this new domain will now reflect my work as an author in general, as opposed to just Phantonics. The normal phantonics.com will STILL link to this site, however. And for the time being… it’s still just Phantonics content haha.

I’ve been working through the writing funk I’ve dealt with the last few weeks. Going back and editing Phantonics chapters with Grammarly Premium has helped me feel a lot better with my work. I think I can finish up the next chapter this weekend. If I’m lucky, I can dish out another chapter so that it can be ready for Patreon.

I want to stream more on Twitch as well, but of course, motivation is an issue for me. Hopefully I can get that ball rolling?

Think that’s it for now. Thank you as always.

New Wiki + Other Updates (Regarding This Week’s Chapter Release as Well)

It’s like 3 in the morning, but I decided I’d make this update anyway. I’ve been working on a wiki for the story, and I think I can finally make it public! Still lots of stuff to fill in, but I’ve been gathering a lot of information onto the thing.

This means that the wiki will now be the #1 source for Phantonics information. I’m removing the pages I’ve had on here since they’re starting to grow outdated and I don’t really feel like editing them. Not to worry, everything you want such as character information, terminology, etc will all be on the wiki for you to check out!

You can find the link to the wiki in the primary category bar at the top of the homepage (also here)! Hopefully cleaning up some of the other links will make it look a bit nicer.

I’ve been debating on trying to post Phantonics on Wattpad. This is something I may start doing, so I’ll let you all know when/if that happens. So it’ll be on the main site, Royal Road, and Wattpad at that point. I asked about it on Twitter and I got an interesting suggestion. What I may start doing is have Royal Road (and maybe Wattpad) be a week behind the main site in terms of chapters. This way, I can have readers on those sites have a reason to visit the main site if they want to read more. They’ll also be two weeks behind in terms of the Patreon chapters in this case.

Speaking of, I might have to delay this week’s Patreon release for a bit. I’ve had family visiting the past few days and have not had time to write. Well, I’ve had time, it’s just my creativity was drained by them… a lot. I put the energy I could muster up into working on the wiki, so I guess, for the time being, this will be the gift everyone gets this week. As soon as I get the chapter done, I’ll post it up on Patreon immediately.

Normal chapter release is still okay, so don’t worry about that. Royal Road readers, I’m probably going to start doing the thing I talked about above this week. So if you want to read the newest chapter, make sure you hop on the main site to do so.

All right, this has been quite a rambly update, so I’ll end it here. Hope you all have a good week!

Patreon Change + Small Update

Hey everyone. I just wanted to make a quick little update about a change on Patreon. Starting today, there will only be one Patreon tier available, the “Hero of Requiem” tier, which replaces the Red Apple tier of 2 USD. The Golden Apple tier, which was 4 USD, has been deleted. However, the main benefit from it, which is thanking you specifically underneath each chapter, is now within the Hero of Requiem tier. So now anyone who supports the tier will be thanked in that manner!

I’ve been starting to slowly get back into the swing of things after being in a funk for a week or two. So, that’s good. I’m also working on something pretty cool, which I’ll reveal pretty soon. It should make organizing information for the series much easier.

Thanks for reading, as always!

Reminder of the New Schedule

Just a reminder that Phantonics is now a once a week release. There was no chapter today since Tuesdays are going to now be the main day. These new chapters will have a longer length to them to compensate. Also, a reminder that you can read chapters a week early via my Patreon! So if that’s up your alley, by all means, I’d greatly appreciate it!

Also, Royal Road is almost caught up with the release schedule, so you’ll be able to read chapters either on there or no the site very soon!

Update: New Ko-fi, No More Chapter Titles, Royal Road, June Schedule Change

I haven’t made one of these update things on the site in a while, so I figured I should.

First of all, I have now made a Ko-fi! If you would like to support me that way, you’re now able to!

I decided that I don’t want to worry about chapter titles at this point. Sometimes they can be quite a pain to come up with, and I feel as though it’s not worth it. I like the way the chapters look without titles as well. It seems more “organized” if that makes sense.

Also, chapters have been continuing daily on Royal Road. Today will be the last chapter of Volume 1, and we will then move on to Volume 2. As I said before, this will continue until Royal Road is caught up to the site. I’ve been attempting to gain more viewership here, so check it out if you would like. I honestly think Royal Road makes it much easier to help you keep track of your reading progress.

And finally, a reminder of the schedule starting in June. Chapters will be once a week as opposed to two. They will be released every Tuesday, with slightly longer chapters to compensate. I feel like this will be easier for me to keep things in order. And when it comes to Patreon, you will be able to gain access to the chapter an entire week early as opposed to a few days with the current schedule.

I think that’s it for now? If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Either here, Twitter, wherever.

-Kyle

Updates to Patreon Tiers

Recently, I got rid of a few of the tier I had on Patreon, leaving only two remaining: The Red Apple and Golden Apple tiers. I mixed certain benefits in that were in higher tiers into these, and also made a few new ones.

This post is to inform everyone that I am now changing the prices of the tiers, including the main one, the Red Apple tier. I had it set to $1, yet I learned today that it would be better to boost this up to $2. The reason? Processing fees. It’s cheaper to have a $2 tier as opposed to a $1 tier. The second tier, the Golden Apple tier, is now at $4 for all the benefits included in that one.

I’m also going to get rid of Patreon goals for the time being. I think once I begin to gain traction on Patreon, I’ll create goals that I think are appropriate.

Check out my Patreon to see the benefits you can get!
